Artists/authors: Give a feature, get a feature

A lot of people on deviantArt are using their journals to spread art around.

It starts when one deviant advertises the willingness to feature other people’s art.
Then people begin commenting on that journal, and the first x number of commenters have three of their own pieces featured on that journal.
In exchange, the people so featured put up their own journal offering similar features, and include three pieces from the person who featured them.

I think I explain it a little better on my own journal:

Geek Quiz

Which apparently, originally came from an Asperger’s evaluation.

http://www.piepalace.ca/blog/asperger-test-aq-test/

Why did I look this up?
Simple. I found it when looking up advice for dealing with my parents (in the “cathartic writing” section of posts), and the subject of “do I have Asperger’s” keeps coming up.

I’ve registered with BookCrossing

http://bookcrossing.com/referral/SideQuestPublication

Here’s the general idea:
You have a book that you’re willing to part with.
You get onto BookCrossing, register the book and where you’re from, add a label to the book with the ID BookCrossing provides, and then you and the book part ways.
You can do a controlled release–pass the book along to someone you know. Or you can release it into the wild–leave it lying around somewhere for another stranger to find.

Weird writing prompts

What do you do, if you know of a conspiracy, but are cursed to never speak of it?

I’ve posted this one up on FaceBook, and I gave it as one of two possible story prompts to a fellow deviantArt user.

Now is the time for me to say what I think of it.

I’ve created a new site!

I’ve just begun uploading information about some of my writing to my new blog.

You can read what I’ve got over at Pioneers of the Shattered Waters. (I really need a shorter address.)

As I continue to add details, I expect to use either blog to help promote my fiction, and perhaps even get some business.

And when I have the money to get my own domain…

I’d probably want to set up Pioneers etc as a sub-directory rather than its own new site….which option is currently not supported by WordPress, so I’d sit on that idea for a while, anyway.
Or perhaps I ought to take a page from Brian Rathbone’s book and create separate sites for the purpose….. And maybe create a distinct book-series FaceBook page while I’m at it. But those decisions are for the future, when I have the money and/or more writing to market.

In which there was a lot of pondering.

The site seems to be focused on gaming–World of Warcraft in particular–but the content of this page is useful for writers who are trying to figure out good ways to make their villains “evil.”

Edit: This post is somewhat out of date as of… well, most of Wrath, actually. It reflects ideas based on game/quest/lore design that doesn’t really exist, especially since the chaos of the Cataclysm. It has nothing to do with a world in which Moira Bronzebeard is trying to rule the dwarves or a world in which Garrosh has visited Azeroth and become a faction leader.

While portions of both factions maintain some of the aspects I’ve highlighted here, the broad generalizations are much less accurate than they had been.

So Etsugal and I were sitting around having lunch yesterday and somehow go on the subject of Warcraft lore, and how everyone has a side. It was brought up that the Alliance is always seen as the “Good Guys” and the Horde, depending on point of view, are “Bad Guys” or at the very least “Monsters that Don’t Deserve to…

Writing Devices–AlphaSmart Neo2

AlphaSmart Neo2

I contacted Renaissance Learning back in June 2011, thinking maybe I could get my hands on a Neo2 as a new writing device.

I just tracked down the email I’d sent:

Writing Devices–Entourage Edge

Entourage Pocket Edge

Hopefully my final writing gadget.

Yet another discontinued product, though this one’s only a few months old.

I’ve only had the Pocket Edge for a few days now, but I am quite pleased already.

The Edge features a double screen. Both screens are touch sensitive, though one side is an e-ink reader and the other is a tablet.
The product came installed with a version of DocsToGo that featured an option to sync directly with Google Docs. Once I updated the version to take care of the glitching, I found I could access my Google Docs account quite nicely.

Writing Devices–Kindle

Amazon Kindle e-reader
(Amazon “smile” link with affiliate code included)
This particular link is to my search results; the device I’ve reviewed, while available to buy used, is discontinued and can no longer generate affiliate links. I may review another device, such as my dad’s Kindle Fire, at a later date.

Yes, I’m including an e-book reader under my writing devices.

Why? Because I’ve played around with it to see if it would do the job.

Sadly, it doesn’t. I’ve heard people use the argument that it’s a reading device, we shouldn’t expect it to do anything else, so on and so forth.

Writing Devices–AlphaSmart Neo

AlphaSmart Neo
(Amazon “smile” link with affiliate code included)

After the Dana, I started looking around at other devices, including other models that AlphaSmart had to offer.

I thought about trying the Neo2, but there were a few problems with that.
One, it wasn’t available for sale on the website…or anywhere else, for that matter.
Two, the price listed on the website is, apparently, for schools only.
Three, near as I can tell, the additional storage (over the original Neo) is only for applications.
I sent an email to the company to confirm details; I’ll post their reply as soon as I track it down.
(Update: I’ve tracked down the email.)
